Advent can develop 4th-Dimension database applications in a client-server environment, over your existing Local Area Network, the Internet, standard telephone lines, or by publishing on the World-Wide-Web. The advantages of a 4th-Dimension client-server environment are many.
Your 4th-Dimension database application can be connected to the World-Wide-Web. Data may simply be published on the Web for others to view, or a full-fledged client interface can be developed to allow users to access the database through Netscape, Mosaic, or any other web browser.
A Web connection can be implemented through your existing Web Server using NetLink/4D from ForeSight Technology. This Common-Gateway Interface application enables communication between the web server and a 4th-Dimension database. A web "hit" is passed along to the database, which formulates a response and returns it to the server for publication.
The Internet tools can also be used to provide e-mail client services to any 4th-Dimension database. The application can automatically generate e-mail to a customer list, or respond automatically to incoming mail. Other Internet services are available, including "Finger", "ph", and "FTP" file transfers.
Advent specializes in integrating systems running on different platforms. We realize that data exchange between systems is usually a necessity, particularly when new desktop PC-based applications must work together with older mini-computer or mainframe systems.
Some applications are easier to implement with a handheld computer working in conjunction with a PC-based system. Advent can integrate data exchange into our 4th-Dimension database applications, so that communication between the handheld and PC is seamless and transparent to the user.
Advent has performed this integration with several types of handheld computers.
